BACK ALLEY & 5 FOOT WAY
Common way of life : People using back alleys and 5 foot way as convenient shortcuts to get to the main streets.
Back alley and 5 foot ways are very characteristic of shophouses. Hence, they are the essence of Chinatown
which I want to respect in my design,

CONCEPT DIAGRAMS

3 main programmatic clusters :Knowledge, Social Hub and Creation.
In program reshuffling, there is the insertion of an inspiration block, between knowledge and creation, which takes on the form of a creative corridor.

Inspiration block (free, fluid.open) , contrasts with the 3 programmatic block (enclosed, fixed, conducive). The purpose of the inspiration block is to juxtapose, to offer another kind of environment for collective
intelligence and it also acts as a bridge between the 3 programmatic blocks.
DERIVATION OF FORM

1 | EXTENSION TO STREETS

Let the thoroughfare be a
continuous extension of Genmill
Lane, leading in visitors into the school naturally

2 | CENTRAL VOID

Subtracting the middle volume to open up a central triangular void. This created the opportunity for a wrapped around corridor allowing continuous circulation.

4 | EXPRESSION OF ROOF

The pitch roof is a characteristic item of the shophouse, by projecting the different pitched roof as illustrated, it highlights the lightweight quality as well as celebrates its
prominence for the role it plays in the shophouse.

3 | ROAD FRONTAGE

Traditionally, shophouses front a road. Hence, the starting point of splitting the 3 programmatic clusters
stems from this principle. As each block has its own
frontage to road, it opens up accessibility of views to the street as well.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSE
Shadow Analysis
Daylight Analysis
Shadow Analysis
Shadow Analysis
Daylight analysis during the summer solstice from 10 am to 6pm.
Shadow analysis for the period of 6am to 6.30pm summer solstice. Building is highly self-shaded. Central
void that is open to sky allows or prevailing wind to pass
through building, hence cooling it passively.

Sustainable Facade
Use of sliding timber panel to provide
shading from the east and west sun.
Motorised horizontal louvre fins on top of
building allows wind to pass through while
keeping rain out.

blocks. This render illustrates the open, transparent, fludity and free-form usuage of space known as the inspiration block. It is to help foster
engagement with different individuals
for exchange of ideas and chances at
collaboration to spark new innovative
ideas. It also offers students and staffs
a chance to take a break between journeys.
